My name is Anne-Michelle Ryder. I was born in Toronto and raised in Canada’s capital of Ottawa. I come from a loving family. My mom Francyne is from Saint-Antoine de Tilly in Quebec and my dad Iain from England. My sole sibling, my younger brother Andrew is currently miles away and living in Hong Kong with his new wife Becky.
Benefiting from French Canadian, British and Scottish roots, I was fortunate to be raised speaking both English and French at home every day. This mix of languages and cultures in my family inspired me to explore the many colors and patterns of the world. The first step was to spend my first year of university studying at Herstmonceux Castle in East Sussex, England. The International Study Centre encouraged all students to visit the very places that were discussed in lectures and to walk the same paths described in the literature. To this day, that school year remains one of the best of my life as it was the year that I met my best friend Dave.
The end of the school year led to a journey throughout Europe. I was fortunate to visit many countries, to view history and architecture at its best and to interact with many glamorous people. During this adventure, I uncovered a love for cultures, a passion for tourism and a need for constant change. Upon my return to Canada, I completed a Bachelor of Arts Honour’s degree in Languages and Linguistics with a specialization in Spanish as well as a Bachelor of Arts Minor in Sociology concurrently at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.
After convocation, I had a tremendous opportunity to work at Canada Post’s head office in Ottawa and excelled while working in the Credit Management Group. Two years later, I decided it was time for a change. It was time to put my love for tourism to work in a Master of Business Administration degree specializing in Tourism Management at the University of Guelph.
In November 2005, I made the move to La Romana in the Dominican Republic as the Destination Manager for Go Travel Direct (GTD), a tour operator based in Ottawa. What an experience! What a fascinating new world and new lifestyle filled with crazy driving, gorgeous sunshine, unfailing kindness from the locals, and a never-ending wealth of possibilities and opportunities. That first year was memorable and culminated with my meeting my husband Victor.
After spending a year and a half working along the eastern coast, I requested the move to the DR’s most popular tourist destination. I established the Punta Cana office for GTD, built the relationships with all hoteliers and lead the team through two successful first seasons of which I remain very proud.
In May 2008, I knew the time had come to challenge myself again. With luck, a friend introduced me to Cheryl. Within a week of our first conversation, I was hard at work as the Rental Manager for DR4Sale and after the first few months, I joined the Sales team. Built on the foundation that teamwork is your best ally, DR4Sale has given me the opportunity to push myself to new limits. I can now proudly say that in May 2010, I celebrated two years with this fast-paced company.
